Indian superstar Rajinikanth's "Jailer 2" is set to make its worldwide streaming debut on Prime Video, capping a theatrical run that the streamer described as record-breaking both in India and overseas.
The film has earned $86 million so far, which makes it the highest grossing Tamil-language movie ever released. Its arrival on the platform means Rajinikanth now occupies the top three spots on the all-time Tamil box office chart, with "Jailer 2" leading "2.0" and the original "Jailer," while his film "Coolie" holds the No. 5 position.
Nelson Dilipkumar directed the action crime sequel, which was produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner. Rajinikanth reprises his role as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired prison officer who anchors the franchise, and Anirudh Ravichander composed the score.
The sequel draws on talent from across Indian cinema. Cameo appearances come from Malayalam veteran Mohanlal, Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan, Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi and Kannada cinema's Shivarajkumar. The broader cast features SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Ramya Krishnan, Namo Narayana and Yogi Babu.
Picking up where the first film left off, the new chapter follows Muthuvel as a crime syndicate with political influence and international reach threatens his family, forcing him out of retirement. Old enemies return to settle scores while new alliances take shape, and he is left to act on his own to protect his family and restore order.
"The response to 'Jailer' was extraordinary, and the love audiences have shown for Muthuvel Pandian has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey," Nelson said. "With 'Jailer 2,' we wanted to build on that special connection while taking the story, action, scale, and emotional stakes to an entirely new level."
"Having Rajinikanth sir reprise his iconic role as Muthuvel Pandian, alongside such a formidable ensemble cast, with Anirudh's music adding its own distinctive energy, made this chapter particularly exciting for us," Nelson added. "Following the film's spectacular theatrical response, we're delighted to bring 'Jailer 2' to Prime Video, where it will join 'Jailer,' taking both chapters of Muthuvel Pandian's story to audiences in India and across the world."
The original "Jailer" is already available on the service. The sequel joins it on Nov. 12, one week after the announcement, streaming in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada. It will be accessible in India as well as more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
