A single 22-mile trip on the Interstate 66 express lanes in Northern Virginia cost one driver $74 this month, according to her account of a recent commute.

Karen, a resident of Gainesville who contacted News4 on Wednesday, said her round-trip total reached $103. She stated that she regularly uses the express lanes to take her husband to doctor appointments in Fairfax. Her eastbound journey on one morning this month incurred a fee of $74. An hour later, her return trip cost $29.

The driver explained that she prefers the express lanes because they are less crowded and offer more predictable travel times. However, she noted that the primary frustration lies in the inability to calculate the total cost before starting the drive. She observed that while overhead signs display the price for each individual segment, drivers cannot sum these costs in real time. The final bill is only revealed after the trip is complete.

Dynamic pricing on the I-66 express lanes causes tolls to fluctuate based on traffic conditions. On Wednesday, reported peak-time tolls for the longest trips outside the Beltway reached $30, $60, and $80. VDOT stated that the system is designed to manage traffic flow by adjusting prices to discourage lane usage during congested periods. Drivers can estimate costs online prior to driving, but these figures may change by the time they reach the road.

The Virginia Department of Transportation indicated that a portion of the toll revenue funds transit services along the I-66 corridor. VDOT also noted that drivers with three or more people in their vehicles can use the lanes without paying a toll. Karen questioned the fairness of the current pricing structure. "Is that really fair pricing? Is that what we agreed to when we went into this idea of having express lanes?" she asked.
