Amazon has begun operating its Amazon Air drone delivery service in Nampa, Idaho. The company launched the program in the city, marking the first time the ultra-fast delivery option is available in Idaho.
The service delivers small packages to homes located within a 170-square-mile radius of the Nampa Amazon Air facility. Amazon states that these deliveries can arrive in as little as 30 minutes. The blue and white drones are now visible flying over local streets.
Amazon currently operates this drone delivery system in Phoenix, Detroit, Chicago, and Dallas. The company lists Boise as the next city for expansion.
Local residents have expressed divided opinions about the new technology. Stephen White, a Nampa resident, said he was interested in trying the service. White noted that he expected his children would enjoy watching a drone arrive at their house. He stated that new technology evolving is inevitable and that he did not mind the flying delivery drivers unless they caused damage to his property.
Laura Gonzalez, another Nampa resident, described the service as neat but also weird. Gonzalez said she could not trust that a purchased item would be delivered to her home by something that was not a person.
Ashley Roberts, a Nampa resident, said she was not a huge fan of the new service. Roberts explained that Amazon's ground-based delivery trucks already arrived in plenty of time for her needs. She added that companies often try to be at the forefront of leading the way without stopping to ask if people wanted the service or if there would be repercussions.
Amazon's drone delivery service is now active in Nampa, with the company planning to extend the network to Boise next.
