Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta became the site of a large public gathering on Sunday as more than 1,000 residents came together to observe Día de los Muertos. The event marked a day dedicated to remembering the dead through celebration rather than grief, featuring traditional music, food, and costumes.

Participants decorated mausoleums across the site with ofrendas, or altars. These displays included flowers, candles, and photographs of those who have passed. The visual transformation turned the resting places into focal points for personal remembrance and communal honoring.

Mauricio Ramos attended the event to reconnect with his late relatives. He described the holiday as a time to get closer to those who have died. Ramos said, “It’s a day that we can celebrate and for us to get closer to them again.”

Local groups participated by building their own displays. Los Niños Primero, a community organization, created an altar honoring its founder. The display also included photos of friends, family members, and pets from community participants. Lizbeth Zamora, the organization’s youth program director, noted that the holiday provides a way to process loss. “You get to a point where a loved one passes away and it’s like you want to celebrate them, you want to continue to remember them,” Zamora said.

Attendees expressed a mix of pride and comfort in their participation. Eugenia Gonzalez highlighted her annual costume as a source of joy. She stated, “There’s beauty and the fact that you never lose someone really because they’re in our heart.” Drag performer Stiletto, who lost his mother during the pandemic, attended to reinforce his sense of connection. He remarked, “Today during church, it’s All Saints, and to hear my family’s name read aloud and then to come and see the celebration of life knowing that death is not the end, thank goodness.”

First-time visitors also joined the crowd. Grayson Owen attended for the first time and appreciated the welcoming atmosphere. “I think it’s really amazing to see everyone come out and just celebrate the life and everything,” Owen said. “I’m happy to be here. It’s a good opportunity.”

The celebration aligns with the traditional observance of the holiday, which falls on November 1 and 2. The gathering at Oakland Cemetery served as a central local event for this annual tradition.
