Bethany Children's Health Center in Bethany, Oklahoma, announced the completion of its new outpatient wing on October 30, ahead of a public preview scheduled for the Route 66 centennial celebration on November 7. The organization, which marks 128 years of service, will use the anniversary to introduce the facility and a new mascot named Cal the Caterpillar. The project is designed to address long wait times for pediatric specialty care.
CEO Nico Gomez stated that the new wing, designated as the Landmark of Hope, aims to provide a calming environment for parents facing complex medical diagnoses. The facility spans approximately 200,000 square feet and carries an estimated cost of $178 million. Leadership officials described the investment as a response to increasing regional demand for local, comprehensive pediatric services.
The expansion includes expanded specialty clinics intended to reduce appointment backlogs that have previously stretched into months. This addition complements recent increases in the center's inpatient capacity. Gomez explained that the design incorporates community-focused features to make the center a civic hub rather than solely a medical destination.
Architectural elements of the complex include a chapel inspired by the shape of a chrysalis and a lobby installation titled the Kaleidoscope of Butterflies. The facility also houses the Anne Noble Brown Conference Center, which will host meetings and public programming. These spaces are intended to encourage non-medical visits and normalize the center as a gathering spot for the community.
The new mascot, Cal the Caterpillar, is a roadside-style figure intended to serve as a local landmark and a symbol of transformation. The name reflects the center's mission to support families during difficult medical situations. The mascot will be part of the public reveal during the November 7 events, which include downtown activities, university programs, and church-hosted gatherings.
Bethany Children's Health Center will host open-house previews in the afternoon of November 7, allowing visitors to view portions of the project before its full opening on May 29. Hospital leaders indicated that further details regarding conference center programming schedules and public tour availability will be posted on the health center's website as the spring opening date approaches.
