Spain has entered a three-day national mourning period following a high-speed train collision that killed 68 people.

The crash occurred in the Castilla-La Mancha region when a Renfe service struck the rear of a stationary Iryo train. Both operators run services on the route connecting Madrid to Seville.

Transport Minister Oscar Puenta stated that an automatic control system malfunction affected 69 kilometers of track. He said the failure caused trains to stop, but the control center resumed traffic under conditions he described as inexplicable.

Puenta noted that the Renfe train traveled 25 kilometers before hitting the Iryo train. He added that staff at the control center had ample time to verify the error but failed to correct it.

Emergency crews worked through the night to clear the wreckage. AFP reporters observed cranes lifting twisted metal from the site. The village of Urdu, located 130 kilometers south of Madrid, set up a nearby school as a point of contact for families.

Red Cross psychologist Carmen Garcia said the coming hours would be long and difficult. She noted that each person would process the event in their own way. Police and journalists from around the world gathered at the scene.

The Civil Guard established four offices in Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, and Seville to collect DNA samples from relatives of the victims. Blood donation centers were also opened in Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid to support the response.

The accident marks one of the deadliest rail disasters in Europe this year. The left-wing government faces criticism regarding its oversight of the national rail network.

The investigation into the cause of the collision is currently ongoing.
