The trial of four men accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her own home is underway at Winchester Crown Court. The defendants are charged with jointly assaulting Joanne Young, 49, with the knowledge and assistance of her then-husband, Philip Young. The court is currently reviewing recorded police interviews and video evidence to establish the timeline of events spanning several years.

Philip Young, 50, has pleaded guilty to multiple counts of abuse. The four co-defendants, who are all from the Wiltshire and Bedfordshire areas, have entered not guilty pleas to various charges of sexual assault and rape. The charges relate to incidents that occurred between June 2016 and February 2023. The court has noted that Philip Young advertised his wife on dating and swinging websites, framing the arrangements as a mutual preference for the couple.

Joanne Young testified that she and her husband had been married for 20 years and had three children. She described their relationship as straight and monogamous, stating, “It was always just the two of us.” She recalled an early joke from her husband about watching her with another man, which she dismissed at the time. However, she noted that he frequently restrained and blindfolded her during sexual encounters, a dynamic she initially accepted without objection.

The victim stated that she would often wake in the middle of the night to find herself blindfolded and restrained without clear memory of how the restraints were applied. She described feeling “hazy” and disoriented during these episodes. On one specific night in February 2023, she removed the blindfold and discovered a stranger in her bedroom. Her husband told the man to “get down,” after which the man ducked out of sight. Young hid in the bathroom and questioned her husband the following day, who claimed he had invited the person to watch them have sex.

During cross-examination, the barrister for defendant Mohammed Hassan questioned the details of the February 2023 incident. Young stated that two other people were present in the room, with one touching her wrist and the other performing a sexual act. When the lawyer suggested the touch might have been bedclothes, she replied, “I disagree, it was a hand around my wrist.” She also recalled a separate, earlier incident where she woke feeling “terrified” and remembered her husband asking, “Wouldn’t you like it if somebody else was here?”

Friends of the couple provided statements to the court describing Philip Young as opinionated and arrogant. They noted that he often used his mobile phone during social outings, leading some to wonder about his activities. The pair ran a business together, and he served as a school governor. Friends stated that he did not exhibit obvious misogynistic behavior in their presence. These character assessments were presented to the jury to provide context on the domestic dynamic.

The jury reviewed recorded video interviews where Young recounted her experiences to police. She explained that after her husband’s arrest, he admitted to sharing explicit images of her online, an act she described as “a kick in the stomach.” She asked him if the February incident was the only time such an event had occurred. He stood and replied, “No.” Young stated that she had previously decided to “stick my head in the sand” to avoid conflict, hoping the behavior would not recur.

Video recordings allegedly made by Philip Young were shown to the jury, depicting three of the defendants during the alleged assaults. The public gallery was cleared before the footage was played. Several jurors appeared distressed while viewing the clips. Joanne Young gave brief in-person evidence on Wednesday afternoon, glancing toward the defendants in the dock. Judge Mr Justice Saini asked her to raise her voice at one point. Philip Young is scheduled to be sentenced following the conclusion of the trial.
