Hasan Piker has filed a federal lawsuit in Washington, D.C., seeking $72.5 million in damages from Scott Jennings. The complaint, which spans 38 pages, was submitted on Tuesday. It alleges that Jennings distorted Piker’s words to suggest he supported lynching Black people.
Piker’s legal team argues that Jennings manipulated footage from a 2024 livestream. The edited clip aired during an episode of The Scott Jennings Show on August 11. According to the filing, the video combined segments from three separate Twitch streams and rearranged the order of Piker’s remarks. The complaint states that the edited version removed context from a debate Piker was watching at the time.
Jennings, who also appears on CNN, described Piker on the broadcast as a radical socialist and a close ally of Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. Jennings told viewers to listen to the clip to understand what socialists planned for the Black community. He characterized Piker as calling for Black voters to be lynched.
The complaint says Piker was reacting to a conservative commentator in a 2024 YouTube debate. Piker’s team asserts he was mocking the other speaker rather than expressing his own views. The filing notes that Piker made sarcastic remarks about returning to a time when lynchings occurred, but the edited video cut out the surrounding context.
Piker’s attorneys claim they sent a written demand for a retraction to Jennings’ lawyers in August. The Jennings team acknowledged receipt of the letter and promised a reply, but no substantive response was issued. As of Wednesday, the post containing the disputed video remained on X, where it had received three million views.
Piker is seeking $27.5 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages. The complaint suggests Jennings had professional and political motives for the broadcast. It notes that Jennings was reportedly under consideration for the position of White House Press Secretary during the weeks surrounding the release.
Jennings did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Piker has over 3.1 million followers on Twitch and 2 million on YouTube. He has campaigned for several Democratic candidates but remains a polarizing figure within the party.
