Officers from the 26th Precinct detained the suspect minutes after the attack, which is the second unprovosed assault on a senior he has committed this year.

A pattern of unprovoked violence against older adults in Manhattan led to the rapid arrest of a 32-year-old man following an attack on an 89-year-old woman in Upper West Side. The incident underscores the challenges law enforcement face when dealing with suspects who have extensive mental health histories and prior convictions for similar offenses.
The assault occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on October 28, in front of a medical office at 565 West 125th Street in Harlem. Police sources report that Eron Cruz punched the victim, causing her face to strike a wall. The impact left her with a laceration and a swelling on her head. She was transported to Saint Luke’s Hospital, where medical staff listed her condition as stable.
The arrest happened quickly due to the proximity of other police units. Officers from the 26th Precinct, who were en route to investigate a separate vehicle theft, were flagged down by a witness describing the scene. The officers pursued Cruz and placed him in custody before he could escape further.
Detectives identified Cruz on Thursday and charged him with assaulting a person over the age of 65. At the time of his arrest, he had two active warrants. He is the fourth time he has been arrested, though his record includes 33 documented incidents related to mental health.
This is not his first attack on a senior citizen this year. On August 7, at roughly 9:35 a.m., Cruz approached a 64-year-old woman at the intersection of Broadway and West 72nd Street. He shoved her to the ground, resulting in back injuries. A previous incident occurred in January 2022, when he was arrested for repeatedly striking a 29-year-old passenger on a Bx19 bus at Saint Nicholas Avenue and West 145th Street.
The suspect is currently in custody awaiting further processing. The 26th Precinct has not announced a specific schedule for his arraignment or additional charges beyond the initial assault count.
