The final Saturday of October presents a defining moment for historically Black college and university football programs across the nation. For several teams, a loss is no longer just a setback; it is a potential exit from the championship picture. The pressure is most acute in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, where three teams hold a 5-1 conference record and the margin for error has vanished.

In Wilberforce, Ohio, Edward Waters travels to face Central State at 1 p.m. in McPherson Stadium. Both squads enter the game with identical 5-1 marks in conference play following dominant Week 8 performances. Edward Waters defeated Clark Atlanta 62-14, while Central State beat Miles 48-20. The winner of this head-to-head matchup will likely secure a top spot entering the final week of the regular season, leaving the loser to rely on other results to stay in the championship game.

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference race remains wide open. Kentucky State, currently 7-2 overall, holds a bye this week. Benedict, which sits at 7-1 overall, hosts Savannah State at 2 p.m. in Columbia, South Carolina. A win for the Benedict Braves would keep them within striking distance of the leaders. Meanwhile, Albany State visits Clark Atlanta at 2 p.m. in an all-Georgia matchup, with both teams seeking to bounce back from a difficult previous week.

In the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the urgency is defined by a five-game race to determine the champion. Morgan State hosts South Carolina State in Baltimore on Thursday night. The stakes are high for the Bears, who entered the league as a top contender but suffered an overtime loss to Howard in Week 8. That defeat came after Morgan State squandered a 14-point fourth-quarter lead. South Carolina State, which opened conference play with a 22-7 victory over Norfolk State, can extend its winning streak to 2-0 in the league. A loss for Morgan State would leave them at 0-2 in conference play, putting them in a difficult position with only two league games remaining.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference features a crucial test for Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Golden Bulls face Virginia State, the 6-0 conference leader, at 1 p.m. in the Irwin Belk Complex. Johnson C. Smith, which is 5-1 in conference play, lost its first league game to Bowie State 16-13. A loss to the Virginia State Pandas would likely push Johnson C. Smith toward the Friday Night Blitz portion of championship weekend, a consolation round for the third and fourth placed teams. Virginia State enters the final two weeks with the best record in the conference.

Other notable matchups include Virginia Union, ranked second in the Division II poll, hosting Lincoln of Pennsylvania at 7 p.m. on Friday in Philadelphia. In Division I, Alabama A&M and Alabama State meet in Birmingham at 3:30 p.m. at Legion Field. Prairie View A&M, Jackson State, and Kentucky State also receive byes during this week's slate.

The HBCU Week 9 Top 10 Poll for Division II lists Virginia State at number one, followed by Virginia Union and Benedict. Edward Waters holds the number four spot, while Kentucky State is number five. In the Division I rankings, Prairie View A&M leads, followed by North Carolina Central and Bethune-Cookman. Jackson State is ranked fourth, and Howard is fifth. Morgan State sits at number six in the Division I standings.

The schedule for the week includes several high-profile games in Philadelphia, where Delaware State and Norfolk State meet at Lincoln Financial Field. In the South, Grambling State travels to Houston to face Texas Southern at 8:30 p.m. at W.W. Thorne Stadium. These contests add depth to a week where every game carries weight for the postseason.
