President Donald Trump faces a critical test of his political standing as Americans vote in the 2026 midterm elections. The stakes involve control of both chambers of Congress and a direct referendum on the president's popularity, which has dropped to an all-time low. Voters are weighing concerns about the war in Iran, rising gas prices, and a perception that the administration has neglected their local priorities for grander events.

Campaign spending for this election cycle has reached a record high, making it the most expensive in U.S. history. A record number of incumbent lawmakers have announced their retirements, opening up seats and complicating the path to a majority. Democrats are positioning this vote as a chance to reclaim the House and Senate, while Republicans argue they need two more years to fix economic issues. Both parties have invested heavily in a wide range of competitive House races.

The White House is closely monitoring turnout in key Senate races in Ohio, Kansas, and South Carolina, where polls close earlier than in many other states. Trump told supporters yesterday that high turnout could lead to a landslide victory, though he spoke in the past tense rather than his usual confident present. His team views strong Republican turnout as a buffer against potential losses, while close results in South Carolina or Florida would signal a difficult night for the party.

In a related legal development, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a last-minute request by the Department of Justice to intervene in a dispute with California over voter rolls. The DOJ sought to stop California from processing ballots for thousands of individuals identified as likely noncitizens. The court's decision allows the state to continue its current processing methods for this election.

Tensions with Iran have escalated ahead of the vote. The U.S. conducted defensive strikes on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz last night, including the key launch point of Qeshm Island. Iranian officials reported explosions on the island, a pattern that has occurred several times in recent months as Iran has attacked shipping vessels. These strikes appear designed to pressure the U.S. into returning to negotiations.

Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz in two days if the U.S. re-engages in talks, shortening a previous proposal of seven days. Iranian inflation stands at approximately 90%, and officials are urging residents to conserve energy as winter approaches. The country's natural gas networks are unstable due to war damage, and Tehran is hoping to wait out the U.S. election cycle in the hope that Trump's party loses control of Congress.

In Massachusetts, Plymouth Superior Court Judge William Sullivan is considering a motion to dismiss the case against Lindsay Clancy. Clancy faces first-degree murder charges for the 2023 deaths of her three young children in their Duxbury home. Her attorney asked the judge yesterday to either dismiss the case or initiate a new trial after a September mistrial. The Plymouth County district attorney's office has not yet disclosed its next steps, though prosecutors stated in a recent motion that they aim to pursue justice for the children.
