New York Jets fans watched their team surrender a comfortable lead in the second half against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. The visitors trailed by nine points at the halftime whistle but scored touchdowns on their first three offensive possessions after the break. That sequence of events resulted in a 38-33 victory for Las Vegas.

The final score masks the margin of error that plagued New York all game. The Jets fell short by a single score in five of their six losses this season. This latest defeat drops their record to 2-6. Coach Aaron Glenn, who calls the defensive plays, acknowledged that the team gave up too many points to stay in contention.

Las Vegas quarterback Kirk Cousins orchestrated the comeback. He threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Nailor to put the Raiders ahead 35-30. On that drive, running back Ashton Jeanty took a short screen pass and broke it for a 45-yard gain. That play moved the ball to the New York 13-yard line. Tight end Brock Bowers also had a productive game, catching two touchdowns and finishing with seven receptions for 92 yards.

Jeanty’s performance offered a subtle response to comments he made earlier in the week. On Wednesday, the second-year running back suggested that some Jets defenders did not want to tackle. He finished the game with only 9 yards on two carries. The Jets largely relied on rookie Mike Washington Jr. from the backfield instead.

Penalties played a major role in the Raiders' ability to sustain drives. Brandon Stephens was called for defensive holding on an incomplete pass on third-and-5. Three plays later, Cousins connected with Bowers for a 2-yard touchdown that cut the Jets' lead to 23-21 in the third quarter. Later in the same period, Jarvis Brownlee Jr. was penalized for pass interference on a third-down incompletion. Cousins ran for a 1-yard touchdown on the subsequent drive, bringing Las Vegas within two points at 30-28.

Defensive players expressed frustration with their execution. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick described the second-half performance as very disappointing. He noted that the team failed to stop known offensive plays. Linebacker Demario Davis said the defense was not pleased with its overall performance, describing the game as too up and down.

Glenn took responsibility for the defensive scheme. He stated that there is no team that can give up that many points and expect to win. He admitted that the defense needs to improve its execution and win one-on-one matchups. He also noted that the team needs to be in the correct plays to stop the offense.

The coaching situation involves a split in responsibilities. Glenn fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks late last season and took over as the primary play caller on defense. Brian Duker serves as the defensive coordinator, but Glenn oversees the operation. Glenn recently described balancing these duties as a challenge he welcomes.

The loss leaves the Jets looking for their first win in four games. They must address their tendency to allow late-game comebacks if they hope to climb out of a 2-6 hole. The team will look to adjust its approach in upcoming fixtures.

Glenn said the team has to improve to get on the right side of the score. He emphasized that talking about how close the games are does not help. The focus now shifts to execution and stopping the opponent’s known threats.
