King Charles stood in a heavy tropical rainstorm in Antigua on Sunday, his hands raised in frustration while Queen Camilla walked away holding the only available umbrella. The visual of the 77-year-old monarch getting drenched quickly overshadowed the couple's official Caribbean tour.
The downpour struck as the royal couple attended the Antigua and Barbuda independence day parade. Charles gestured and turned repeatedly, trying to get someone's attention, while Camilla remained shielded from the weather. Locals in the parade route continued their activities without stopping despite the storm.
Staff eventually handed an umbrella to the king. In a video shared on the royal family's Instagram account, Charles joked with Prime Minister Gaston Browne about the incident. "I think I'm about to grow watercress on my suit," he said.
This is not the first time the king has displayed visible irritation in public. Shortly after ascending to the throne in 2022, he went viral for his reaction to a leaking pen at an event in Northern Ireland. "Oh God, I hate this," he said at the time, adding that he could not bear the object.
He has since referred to that moment with humor, telling an audience he hoped his pen would work because it usually does not. Charles is scheduled to address Commonwealth leaders on Tuesday. His remarks are expected to focus on Britain's history with the slave trade, a topic that has defined the current visit.
