Nicolas Cage is supporting Ryan Gosling’s upcoming portrayal of Ghost Rider, a role Cage himself played for two films nearly two decades ago.
Cage starred as Johnny Blaze in the 2007 original and its 2012 sequel, Spirit of Vengeance. Marvel announced in July that Gosling would lead a new version of the character, with Shawn Levy directing the project.
At the premiere of his new film Madden, Cage told The Hollywood Reporter that he is eager to see what Gosling does with the part. "Ryan’s going to do his thing with it and I’m looking forward to seeing it," Cage said. He noted that the two actors have a friendly relationship and that he wished Gosling well on his new venture.
Gosling stated during the Comic-Con announcement in July that he had wanted to play the character for a long time. The casting carries a personal connection, as Gosling’s wife, Eva Mendes, acted alongside Cage in the 2007 film. Mendes has also voiced her support for her husband taking on the fiery role.
The new Ghost Rider movie is currently set for a July 28, 2028 release. Connor Storrie, who recently gained fame for his role in Heated Rivalry, is in negotiations to play the villain.
Cage is currently promoting Madden, a David O. Russell film about the football figure and his relationship with Raiders owner Al Davis. The movie opens in limited theaters on Nov. 11 and begins streaming on Prime Video on Nov. 18.
