Patrick Stewart, the British actor who defined two of the 20th and 21st centuries' most popular science fiction franchises, has died. The family confirmed the news on Thursday, stating the 86-year-old died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

The announcement described his final period as a "brief and poignant journey" complicated by Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. Stewart is survived by his wife, Sunny Ozell, and his children.

Stewart gained global recognition for his dual roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' and Professor Charles Xavier in the 'X-Men' film series. His portrayal of Picard spanned multiple series and films, while his work as Xavier began with the first 'X-Men' movie in 2000.

The news prompted immediate tributes from colleagues who worked with him across both franchises. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige released a statement recalling his first encounter with Stewart on the set of the original 'X-Men' film.

"I’ll never forget the first time I saw Sir Patrick Stewart on the set of the first X-Men," Feige said. "After years of knowing him as the inimitable Captain Picard, I was in awe." Feige added that Stewart possessed a quiet strength and a wonderfully sharp sense of humor offscreen.

Marvel Studios and Marvel Entertainment also issued a joint statement on social media Thursday. The post expressed deep sadness at the passing of the actor, praising his ability to bring grace and intelligence to the character of Professor Xavier. The company noted that Stewart will appear as Xavier in the upcoming film 'Avengers: Doomsday,' scheduled for release in theaters on December 18.

Actors from the 'Star Trek' universe also shared their memories. Wil Wheaton, who starred alongside Stewart in 'The Next Generation,' posted a photograph of the two with the caption "Godspeed, Captain." Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander William Riker, shared a photo on his Instagram Story with the message "Rest in peace my friend."

Terry Matalas, the showrunner for the third and final season of 'Star Trek: Picard,' also honored Stewart. Matalas shared a photo of the actor smiling and wrote, "Oh Captain, my Captain. This is how I’ll always remember you."

William Shatner, who portrayed Captain James T. Kirk in the original 'Star Trek' series, shared a photo of the two actors together. The pair first met in their roles for the 1994 film 'Star Trek: Generations.' Shatner described Stewart as a magnificent actor who brought a deep sense of humanity to every role.

"My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed," Shatner wrote. Marvel is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News and Good Morning America, which broadcast the initial reports of the death.
