Voters in Sarasota, Manatee, and Pinellas counties will send a new representative to Washington this year. Sydney Gruters won the race for Florida House District 16, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of long-time Republican congressman Vern Buchanan.

Gruters, 45, served for more than a decade as an aide to Buchanan before becoming the executive director of the New College Foundation in Sarasota. She is a working mother of three and is married to Joe Gruters, the chairman of the Republican National Committee. Her campaign platform focused on securing borders, lowering costs through conservative solutions, and strengthening benefits for veterans.

The race featured a stark difference in financial resources. According to BallotPedia, Gruters raised $1.6 million for her campaign, roughly twice the amount collected by her opponent. Kirschner, a former mayor of Sarasota and Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala, ran as the challenger in the district.

Tensions rose during the final weeks of the campaign. Gruters’ team and affiliated super PACs launched a massive spending effort that portrayed Kirschner as a radical extremist. The Bradenton Times reported that the ads included AI-generated imagery showing Kirschner on a police perp walk holding a sign that read Too Risky for Florida. Kirschner has never been arrested.

Gruters received endorsements from several establishment figures, including Governor Ron DeSantis, Senator Rick Scott, and House Speaker Mike Johnson. She also backed by local leaders such as the sheriffs of Pinellas and Sarasota Counties and police and fire unions. Buchanan, her predecessor, also supported her candidacy.

Kirschner garnered support from the Florida Education Association, the Florida AFL-CIO, and the Democratic Environmental Caucus of Florida. He also received endorsements from some Republicans, including former five-term congressman Dan Miller and Manatee County Commissioner George Kruse.

Gruters did not participate in debates or respond to voter guide questions from WUSF or Ballotpedia. Her campaign website featured a photo of her smiling next to President Donald Trump alongside a post detailing his endorsement. The district spans parts of three counties in western Florida.
