Maui Health selected Nordic PCL Construction as the general contractor for the Kula Hospital restoration project on Monday. The hospital is targeting a reopening in late summer 2027.

The facility, its Emergency Department, and the Hale Makamae care center have been closed since the March 2026 Kona Low storms caused structural damage. The construction firm will lead repairs and upgrades to patient rooms, activity areas, and nurse stations.

Essential building systems will also be repaired during the work. Exterior windows and doors are slated for replacement to strengthen the historic building against future severe weather.

The project is estimated to cost approximately $65 million. Funding comes from the state of Hawaii and Kaiser Permanente. Maui Health CEO Wade Ebersole said the organization has focused on returning the hospital to the Upcountry community since the storms.

Maui Health stated that the final reopening timeline depends on weather conditions, material availability, and construction progress. Specific dates for the Emergency Department and Hale Makamae have not yet been announced.

The Kula Clinic remains open and continues to serve patients during the restoration period.
