More than $900 million in new infrastructure spending is now authorized in Charlotte County after voters approved a 20-year local sales tax extension on Tuesday. The measure secured 59.5% of the vote, with 56,284 ballots cast in favor and 38,396 against, according to unofficial results from the county Supervisor of Elections office.

This extension differs from previous renewals in duration and capital planning strategy. County commissioners proposed a 20-year term to allow the government to issue bonds that are repaid over time using tax revenue. Officials stated this approach enables projects to be fully funded and completed faster while reducing total costs. A 10-year extension would have supported only $468 million in projects.

The 1% local option sales tax was first approved in 1994 and has been extended five times over the past 32 years. The current authorization expires at the end of December. The new 20-year framework will finance major infrastructure, public safety, and community improvements. The project list includes a rebuild of the Charlotte County Cultural Center and significant upgrades to Harborview Road, Edgewater Drive, and Flamingo Road. Outgoing Commissioner Stephen R. Deutsch noted that approximately 25% of the tax burden is borne by visitors. He stated that voters recognized the benefit of completing a larger volume of work quickly and at a lower cost.

Voters also approved a one-mill property tax for the Charlotte County School District, passing the measure with 71.91% of the vote. The final count stood at 69,298 yes votes to 27,070 no votes. This tax, first enacted in 2018, generates about $37 million annually. The revenue supports student programs, instructional staffing, and salaries. It also funds reading and math coaches as well as an additional 30 minutes of daily instruction for staff. District officials credited the tax with contributing to the school system's first A rating in 15 years this past summer. For a home with a taxable value of $200,000 and no exemptions, the tax equates to $200 in annual school costs.

A third measure, the Continuation of Water Quality Protection, Wildlife Habitat Preservation, and Parks Ad Valorem Tax and Bonds, received 78.39% approval. The vote count was 75,298 in favor and 20,759 against. This authorization permits the county to levy a 0.20 mill ad valorem tax and issue up to $70 million in bonds. The funds are designated to finance, acquire, improve, and manage environmentally sensitive lands. The stated goals include protecting drinking water sources, preserving fish and wildlife habitat, reducing flooding, and providing nature-based parks.

While local tax measures passed with strong support, voters also approved statewide Amendment 3. The measure, which extends homestead exemptions to cut back on property taxes, received 74.06% of the vote. Charlotte County residents cast 72,116 ballots in support of the amendment and 25,261 against it.
