Antonio Baumgartner, 30, stands accused of attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault following a violent dispute with his roommate in Bloomington.
Hennepin County prosecutors filed the criminal complaint on Thursday. Officers responded to a reported stabbing near 96th Street West. They discovered the victim in the garage, covered in blood and holding a towel to his arm. The victim stated he shared the home with Baumgartner for 10 months before the incident.
According to the complaint, the victim was asleep when he heard pounding on his bedroom door. Baumgartner entered the room and began stabbing him without warning. Police observed deep cuts on the victim's forearm and inner bicep. Paramedics later found a deep laceration in the victim's stomach where part of his bowel was protruding. Investigators reported the victim required a six-hour surgery to address the injuries.
Baumgartner fled the scene and reportedly went to his sister's home. His sister told police that Baumgartner called her around 2:20 a.m. He said, “I’ve had it with this place,” and asked for a ride. She also noted he had been using drugs earlier in the day, which raised her concern. Police later arrested Baumgartner at the scene of a break-in. He had blood on his pants at the time of his arrest.
Court records indicate Baumgartner remained in custody on Friday. A judge set bail at $1 million. The order includes conditions that he maintain no contact with the victim and avoid the shared address. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 2 for his first appearance.
