Eleven states now host schools equipped with the SafeDefend emergency lockdown system, a technology that Winton Woods City Schools has fully adopted across its district. The expansion means every campus in the Ohio district now has access to the same rapid-response hardware.

The district first installed the system in 2021. Recent training at the Winton Woods Early Childhood Central Campus marked the completion of the district-wide rollout. The company behind the technology is based in Kansas and was founded by a former educator after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Staff activate the system by touching a fingerprint to a wall-mounted biometric box. The box unlocks to reveal a specific set of emergency tools. These items include gel pepper spray, a window-breaking baton, a trauma kit, a safety vest, flex cuffs, a high-intensity strobe flashlight, and a whistle.

Upon activation, the system triggers a campus-wide alarm and notifies local law enforcement. Dan Cole of SafeDefend described the process as a method to prepare, notify, and protect. He stated that the tools give staff peace of mind while they wait for help. Cole said early access to the equipment helps reduce chaos during the initial minutes of a crisis.

Steve Denny, the superintendent of Winton Woods City Schools, said the expansion ensures equal security measures in every building. He noted that keeping children safe enables the district's primary mission of education. Denny said the vision is to provide an equal amount of protection across the entire district.

The district funded the expansion using state grant dollars and local funds. The biometric boxes have battery backups that keep them functional during power outages. School leaders plan to integrate the new equipment into routine safety drills. Winton Woods is the first school district in the Cincinnati area to implement this specific technology.
