The White House and the former Obama campaign are locked in a public dispute over a joke made during a campaign stop in Ohio. Former President Barack Obama compared the gilded renovations inside the presidential residence to the decor of a Cheesecake Factory, a chain known for its ornate and kitschy interiors. He told the crowd that the changes looked like Saddam Hussein had opened a restaurant, noting that gold was everywhere.

Obama made the remarks on Saturday while campaigning for Democrats ahead of the midterms. He also criticized the current administration for two years of chaos and alleged that they were paving over the Rose Garden to build a ballroom larger than the White House. The former president said he was surprised the White House focused on the restaurant joke rather than policy issues like inflation and corruption.

President Donald Trump responded on Monday, defending his design choices as necessary repairs. He told reporters that the White House was in terrible condition before he took office and is now in its best shape since 1792. Trump dismissed Obama as not a smart guy and claimed he used the finest artisans in the world for the work.

The administration escalated the response through social media and executive visits. Vice President JD Vance accused Obama of being super elitist on the social platform X. The White House account posted a photo of the chain's massive menu to compare it to the list of Trump’s accomplishments. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent ate lunch at a Cheesecake Factory near the White House on Monday, telling journalists he had a great meal and advising the Martha's Vineyard set to give the food a try.

Bessent also referenced the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, comparing its architecture to a tomb. Obama returned to the topic at a rally in Georgia on Wednesday. He stated that the administration mobilized a government-wide response to a joke rather than to economic problems. He added that the Treasury Secretary was told to hold a press conference in front of the restaurant.

The former president noted he has been a patron of the chain for years, asking if he could have survived raising his two daughters without visiting the restaurant. Later in the week, Trump discussed affordability at a rally in Texas. He joked that the $5,000 cash payment promised to citizens if Republicans keep Congress would not cover a meal at his Mar-a-Lago club.

Trump told supporters the money might buy a hamburger and a small dessert, but then advised them not to go there if they were price-conscious.
