Katie Zacharia published a detailed list of her clothing on social media on the eve of Halloween. The post, shared on Oct. 13, itemized the outfit she wore during her sole press briefing. She noted that the ensemble included high heels valued at approximately $1,000 and a blazer, bringing the total cost of the attire to about $2,500.
Zacharia served as White House press secretary for five days, from Oct. 12 to Oct. 16. Her tenure ended when she was replaced, a period that broke the previous record for the shortest stint in the role. That prior record belonged to Anthony Scaramucci, who served for 10 days during the first Trump administration.
Before her departure, Trump selected Zacharia to succeed Karoline Leavitt. Leavitt had been a favored figure in the administration. Zacharia broke from recent tradition by holding a press conference on her second day in office. Most predecessors used that time to prepare for their debut rather than speaking to the media immediately.
Her only briefing lasted between 14 and 15 minutes. Reporters described the session as historically brief. Many attendees said she appeared intimidated and struggled to command the room. The performance drew widespread criticism from the press corps.
Controversy followed her departure. Zacharia faced questions about her claim to be a lawyer despite never passing the bar exam. She also faced intense interviews on Fox News. The combination of the backlash and media scrutiny led to her exit from the position. She is now moving into a new role within the Trump administration, though the specific duties of that position have not been defined.
Since leaving the White House, Zacharia has spoken about her time in the role. Last week, she told Newsweek that she hoped trick-or-treaters would dress up as her this Halloween. She said the family would wear costumes, with her wearing the original outfit and her children in separate designs. She also stated she would be willing to return to the press secretary role if Trump asked her to do so again.
Her social media activity continued after her departure. She posted photos of her dogs wearing costumes that parodied major news organizations. One dog wore a costume labeled Paw-litico, a play on Politico. The other wore a costume labeled Woofington Post, referencing The Washington Post.
