Florida voters selected Byron Donalds as their next chief executive on Tuesday night. He defeated state judge David Jolly in the general election.
Donalds, a former U.S. representative from the state's 19th district, won the Republican primary earlier this year. President Donald Trump endorsed him at a campaign rally in The Villages in May 2026. The president called him a future great governor during that appearance. That support was a major factor in a state where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats by approximately 1.5 million.
Donalds entered politics in 2016 when he won a seat in the Florida House of Representatives. He served two terms in that body before moving to the U.S. Congress in 2020. In Washington, he became a frequent guest on conservative television networks. He also served as a leading voice within the House Freedom Caucus. His public statements focused heavily on immigration, cultural issues, and race. By 2023, he had gained national recognition among conservative leaders. Colleagues in the populist wing of the party nominated him for the position of speaker of the House.
The transition to the governor's mansion is scheduled for early next year. Donalds will be sworn in as Florida's 47th governor on January 5, 2027. His victory marks a shift in state leadership from the judiciary to the legislative branch.
