House Democrats are positioning 300 staff members to observe vote tabulation in approximately 60 to 70 jurisdictions where results are expected to be tight. Rep. Joe Morelle, D-N.Y., detailed these preparations during a virtual media briefing on Friday. He serves as the Ranking Member on the Committee on House Administration, which holds jurisdiction over federal election law.

The deployment aims to create contemporaneous records of the counting process. Morelle stated that the team will include lawmakers, litigators, activists, and organizers. Their goal is to ensure that if legal challenges arise, the party has personnel on the ground witnessing the results. This effort is part of a caucus-wide push led by House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries to secure the integrity of the midterms.

President Donald Trump has recently increased scrutiny on election security. Last Monday, he posted on Truth Social offering a $1 million award for reports of voter fraud. The administration has suggested that tens of thousands of ineligible voters, including immigrants, may be casting ballots. However, the Justice Department has charged only a few dozen people with election-related crimes this year.

In the days before the election, the Trump administration initiated legal actions in two states. In Alaska, officials sought to block the certification of U.S. Senate race results to investigate whether two candidates with similar names confused voters. A federal judge threw out that lawsuit on Sunday.

In California, the administration attempted to force the state to set aside 20,000 ballots based on claims that they belonged to likely noncitizens. The Supreme Court rejected that effort on Monday. Morelle noted that the Democratic oversight team is ready to counter these and other potential interference attempts.

Morelle emphasized that the party intends to protect the right to vote from threats, intimidation, and violence. He said every eligible American must have the opportunity to cast a meaningful ballot. The observers will provide firsthand notes to support the accurate and fair counting of votes.
