Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in Kyiv on Monday, October 26, accompanied by three cabinet ministers to negotiate energy deals and strengthen bilateral ties. The delegation includes Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea, Minister of Defence Anatolie Nosatîi, and Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu. Their presence signals a shift toward integrating Moldova’s security and economic planning with its Ukrainian neighbor.
The visit follows a meeting between Tofan and Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal on October 14, where they addressed shared energy challenges and winter preparations. On October 12, Tofan publicly stated that Moldova was considering purchasing natural gas from Ukraine to meet domestic needs. This potential deal aims to reduce Moldova’s reliance on Russian energy sources, a key component of its economic independence strategy.
According to the Moldovan government, the prime ministers will discuss the development of economic and trade cooperation, regional security, and both nations’ paths toward European Union membership. Tofan is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, and Parliament Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk. These high-level engagements are designed to align political will on the EU accession timeline.
Beyond bilateral meetings, Tofan and Koretskyi will participate in the Kyiv International Economic Forum. The event focuses on investment opportunities and the development of economic cooperation between the two countries. Moldovan President Maia Sandu has also indicated that Moldova is prepared to accept a new influx of Ukrainian refugees if the humanitarian situation deteriorates further, adding a social dimension to the diplomatic trip.
